Straight Out of Wakanda

With this episode we wrap up our “Desperately Seeking Diplomats” phase as we prepare to start shooting episodes with real, live, working diplomats in the next few weeks So this episode was really a test-run with our camera woman Catherine Warren filling in as the ambassador from Wakanda. The idea was to work out the mechanics of the show before bringing the diplomat on. We got the idea of a Wakanda episode when we saw their diplomats at the UN at the end of the Black Panther movie, so it’s a shameless tie-in. We also had some action worthy of the web series Hot Ones, just saying.

About Us

There are 193 countries represented at the United Nations, each one has diplomats who know where to go for that taste of home. Each Dining With Diplomats episode features a different country’s envoy celebrating their national cuisine at a local restaurant. With over 8,000 restaurants from 130 nations, New York is uniquely positioned to provide an introduction to international eating.  This allows Dining With Diplomats to travel globe without leaving town. Along the way, the city’s aromas, atmospheres and neighborhoods are revealed through the people for whom these tastes are a return to the familiar. Dining With Diplomats celebrates New York’s diversity through the one thing we all understand _ food.

Our journey begins with our host, former-Associated Press UN Correspondent Michael Astor, meeting the diplomat at the country’s Consul or U.N. mission and then riding along with them to the chosen restaurant. There, we meet the chef and enjoy a typical meal while discussing what’s unique and interesting about the country’s food as well as the challenges in achieving authentic flavors amid New York’s hustle bustle. During the meal we learn about more than just food, we learn about the diplomat’s country, the neighborhood where the restaurant is located and the people who live there. The show aims to provide a taste of the international community that surrounds us and opens up the city’s neighborhoods as foreign destinations without having to cross a single border.

With a dash of humor and a sprinkling of fascinating insights, the show will not only celebrate eating but also about our interconnectedness as a city, country and planet. After saying goodbye to the diplomat, the host walks around the neighborhood exploring the neighborhood a bit before returning home by subway.

Dining with Diplomats will speak to New York visitors, citizens, and food adventurers on the hunt for the real deal. The show provides a stamp of authenticity to a local restaurant and opens up an often, off-the-beaten path neighborhood to viewers and urban explorers.

The show will provide opportunities for a web presence with additional content such as recipes, travel information, both for the ethnic neighborhood as well as the home country, videos of food events at the consulates and the U.N.
